The inner anxiety, restlessness, and other emotional states all belong to the manas, and are outwardly manifested in the states of the mind consciousness and the five sense consciousnesses. Inner conflict mostly manifests as conflict between the manas and the mind consciousness; because the two differ in cognition, in comprehension, and in ideas and views, conflict arises.
Whatever the manas has, we have; whatever the manas lacks, we lack. The mind consciousness is not the consciousness that makes decisions; whatever it has or lacks, as long as it does not affect the manas, is of no use. If the manas lacks the mental factor of desire, it will not intend to do anything, and one will be without desire and without seeking, and the mind will be pure. No matter what desires the mind consciousness has, it cannot influence the manas; if the manas does not make the decision, nothing will be done. However, the manas does have greed and desire, which is called craving and desire (tṛṣṇā). One who has eradicated craving and desire is a third-fruit person (anāgāmin) possessing the meditative concentration of the first dhyāna, and in future lives can be reborn in the form realm heavens.
