What is liberation? Liberation is being free from all afflictions of greed, hatred, and delusion; liberation is having no hindrance and no bondage in the mind toward form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas—neither greedy nor hateful, neither delighted nor sorrowful; liberation is having no hindrance and no bondage toward all people, affairs, things, and principles—neither greedy nor hateful, neither delighted nor sorrowful, whether one has something or has nothing, it is all the same; liberation is responding to food, clothing, shelter, daily necessities, and travel according to conditions without seeking anything, without a grasping mind; liberation is living in this world, knowing well contentment and sufficiency, getting by as one can, without improper desires; liberation is neither dwelling on the past nor fantasizing about the future, nor abiding in the present, with not a single thought lingering; liberation is the mind not attaching to all people, affairs, things, and principles, clearly understanding their suffering, emptiness, impermanence, and non-self, clearly understanding their origins and course, clearly understanding their illusory nature and unattainability; liberation is the mind being empty toward all dharmas, free and unobstructed.
