Dharma Teachings

Proposition, Reason, Example

Each topic should be treated like a short essay, requiring you to establish your own thesis, then develop supporting evidence, employing analogies for clarification or citing concrete examples.

The "thesis" (宗) refers to the central proposition, your main argument.

The "reason" (因) constitutes the evidence, the grounds of your argument, the factual basis.

The "analogy" (喻) represents an apt and vivid illustration used to elucidate the thesis.

Only by mastering this method may one step onto the forum to debate the Dharma with others. Without this skill, do not participate in any debate. Practicing speaking skills offstage is acceptable.

However, eloquence does not equal sound logical thinking, does not equal the ability to articulate facts clearly, does not equal grasping the truth, and does not equal possessing great wisdom. Eloquence pales in comparison to intellect and logical reasoning ability.
