Studying theory is for the purpose of experiential realization; only after experiential realization can one put it into practice. Only then can the theories learned be practically applied, benefiting both body and mind, alleviating afflictions, thereby transforming oneself and attaining liberation and great freedom.
If the theories studied do not lead to experiential realization, one cannot obtain genuine benefits, nor will one achieve liberation and freedom. Theory is studied and comprehended by the conscious mind, experiential realization is mastered and integrated by the root mind (manas), the alleviation of afflictions and transformation of oneself are governed by the root mind, while the attainment of liberation and freedom is experienced by the entire psychophysical aggregate (five aggregates). Each of these stages is accomplished through the tathāgatagarbha (Buddha-nature) cooperating by projecting the necessary seeds.
