Shurangama Sutra, Volume 9, Original Text (2)

Original text: 阿难。世间一切。所修心人。不假禅那。无有智慧。

Explanation: The Buddha said that for all people in the world who cultivate the mind, if they do not rely on dhyāna, wisdom cannot arise. Only with meditative concentration (samādhi) can one subdue one's own mind; only when one's own mind is purified can one effectively engage in contemplative practice (vipaśyanā-caryā) and investigation, thereby realizing and giving birth to wisdom. Without meditative concentration, the mind is like turbid water that reflects no clear image, unable to quietly and deeply engage in contemplative practice and reflection; one can only rely on emotional speculation and intellectual understanding, and thus cannot attain realization. Whoever speaks thus speaks the Buddha's words; whoever speaks otherwise speaks the words of Māra.
