Question: Since consciousness arises at the point where the sense faculties and their objects make contact, and mental consciousness does not arise anywhere other than at the subtle sense faculties, can it be determined that the mental faculty resides at the subtle sense faculties?
Answer: The mental faculty is not entirely confined to the subtle sense faculties either. The entire brain is sustained by the mental faculty. The mental faculty neither departs from the location of the subtle sense faculties nor is it exclusively present there. Beyond the subtle sense faculties, there are also mental objects; wherever these exist, there must be the mental faculty's discernment. Whenever the eighth consciousness manifests any phenomenon, the mental faculty necessarily relies on the eighth consciousness to make contact with and apprehend it.
