When eradicating the view of self (satkāya-dṛṣṭi-prahāṇa), one severs the fetter of doubt among the three fetters; one must not sever only the mind consciousness's doubt while leaving the manas's doubt unsevered. If the manas carries its doubt about the view of self into the neutrino-body (antarā-bhava), one cannot escape the three evil destinies, being bound by the fetter of doubt and unable to attain liberation from the three evil destinies. Only when the manas's doubt is resolved is ignorance broken; when all the manas's doubts are resolved and ignorance is exhausted, one will attain buddhahood. There has never been a single Buddha whose manas carried the bondage of doubt to attain buddhahood, nor a bodhisattva whose manas carried the fetter of doubt to become a Mahāyāna bodhisattva who breaks through beginningless ignorance, much less a sage of the liberation path whose manas carried the fetter of doubt to attain liberation from the suffering of birth and death in the three realms.
