Consciousness possesses strong analytical thinking abilities and can articulate reasoning, whereas the manas does not understand reasoning and must therefore follow the logic presented by consciousness. On many occasions, the manas is indecisive and must comply with the arrangements made by consciousness. If this were not the case, the manas would forever act according to its own habits, disregarding consciousness, and would never come to understand the truth, never embark on the path of Buddhist practice, never eliminate vexations, and never attain Buddhahood. In a family, the head of the household makes decisions, but at times must also listen to the children’s opinions and fulfill their requests. Similarly, in a nation, the president must also listen to public opinion.
