 The Retributive Results of the Ten Evil Deeds All Manifest at the Time of Death

Original text: 佛言大王。如是如是。愚痴异生。眼见恶色。即生于恼。厌离破坏。毁呰过失。造嗔业行。身业三种。语业四种。意业三种。最初造作。刹那灭谢。是业不依。东西南北。四维上下。中间而住。于死边际。命根灭时。自分业报。皆悉现前。犹如梦觉。念梦中事。

Explanation: The Buddha said: Great King, indeed it is so, well spoken. When foolish ordinary beings (pṛthagjana) see evil forms with their eyes, anger and vexation immediately arise in their minds; they give rise to revulsion and the wish to abandon and destroy the evil form, denouncing its various faults, and thereby create karmic formations of hatred. These karmic formations are divided into three kinds of bodily karma, four kinds of verbal karma, and three kinds of mental karma. The karmic formations initially created perish instant by instant; these karmic formations do not abide depending on east, west, south, north, the four intermediate directions, above and below, or the middle. When the time of death arrives and the life faculty perishes, the retributive results of the karma one has created oneself all manifest before one, just like waking from a dream while still recollecting the events of the dream.
