The Wisdom State of Anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti

The Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra, Volume 449, states (Taishō 7·264b): "Such non-retrogressing bodhisattva mahāsattvas, contemplating all dharmas with the emptiness of inherent characteristics, have entered the correct nature beyond birth of bodhisattvas, and do not perceive even the slightest dharma as obtainable. Because nothing is obtainable, there is nothing created. Because nothing is created, ultimately there is no birth. Because ultimately there is no birth, it is called the patience of the unborn dharmas. By attaining such patience of the unborn dharmas, they are called non-retrogressing bodhisattva mahāsattvas."

This means that the bodhisattva, contemplating the emptiness of all dharmas, enters the first ground of the Path of Seeing, initially realizing the principle that all dharmas ultimately are unborn, which is called the patience of the unborn dharmas.

Explanation: After awakening the mind and attaining enlightenment, non-retrogressing bodhisattvas observe that the characteristics of their own five aggregates and eighteen realms are all empty. Expanding from this perspective, they observe that all other dharmas are also empty, never truly born, and that not a single dharma in the world is obtainable. Bodhisattvas who can observe in this way genuinely realize the emptiness and unborn nature of all dharmas, equivalent to the liberation state of a fourth-stage arhat. Because all dharmas are unobtainable, all dharmas are also uncreated; because nothing is created, all dharmas ultimately are unborn, having never arisen. Because they realize that all dharmas are ultimately unborn and accept this truth, it is called the patience of the unborn dharmas. By attaining this patience of the unborn dharmas, they no longer retrogress from the supreme path to enlightenment and forever walk the bodhisattva path.

The patience of the unborn merely knows the emptiness of the self in the five aggregates, while the patience of the unborn dharmas not only realizes the emptiness of the self in the five aggregates but also realizes the emptiness of all dharmas, encompassing a vast scope and profound depth. This is beyond comparison to bodhisattvas before the first ground or arhats. Bodhisattvas after the first ground, possessing the wisdom of the patience of the unborn dharmas, aside from cultivation and propagating the Dharma, do not engage in worldly affairs, do not seek worldly benefits, and take no delight in fame, praise, or material gain, focusing solely on the Buddha Way.
