(36) Original text: 问。几支灭是缘尽所显。答。即此三是。余支缘故。 

Explanation: How many links, when extinguished, are what the exhaustion of conditions manifests? Answer: The three links of existence (bhava), birth (jāti), and aging-and-death (jarā-maraṇa), when extinguished, are what the exhaustion of conditions manifests. When the conditions of the three realms are exhausted, existence in the three realms will no longer appear; birth will cease, and there will be no more aging and death. Apart from these three links, although the remaining links have been extinguished, the conditions with the three realms have not been severed, and conditions still exist. For example, through contemplating the twelve links of dependent origination, ignorance (avidyā) is extinguished, but there are still conditions with the three realms, so the manas still has volitional formations present—only that the volitional formations of ignorance have been extinguished; the six consciousnesses still exist, only that they are the six consciousnesses without ignorance, performing bodily, verbal, and mental actions that are enlightened and undefiled. 

There is still name-and-form (nāma-rūpa) present, only that it is name-and-form without ignorance; there is still the six sense bases (ṣaḍāyatana) present, only that they are undefiled; there is still contact (sparśa) present, only that it is enlightened contact with ignorance extinguished; there is still feeling (vedanā) present, only that it is feeling with ignorance extinguished; perhaps there is still craving (tṛṣṇā) present, only that it is craving with ignorance extinguished—craving the Buddha-dharma and craving the cultivation of the Mahāyāna path, that is all; there is still grasping (upādāna) present, only that it is grasping with ignorance extinguished—grasping the Mahāyāna Buddha-dharma and wholesome dharmas, that is all; there are still dharmas of the three realms present, only that one does not crave the dharmas of the three realms; there is still aging and death present, only that there is remaining suffering, not so much suffering and pain. Mahāyāna bodhisattvas and pratyekabuddhas will still have birth in future lives; in the present life there are still the twelve enlightened links, but no longer the twelve links of ignorance. 

Original text: 问。几支灭是受尽所显。答。一。谓由烦恼已断故。所依灭时。此一切受。皆永息灭故。 

Explanation: Question: How many links, when extinguished, are the links manifested by the exhaustion of feeling? Answer: Only one—the link of feeling. The extinguishing of the single link of feeling is the dharma manifested by the exhaustion of feeling. Because the afflictions have already been completely severed, when the dharmas upon which feeling depends are extinguished, all of these feelings will be forever extinguished.
