The fruition of realizing the absence of self is the manas's recognition that the five aggregates are not the true self. At the moment of enlightenment and awakening the mind, the manas not only acknowledges that the five aggregates are illusory and not the true self, but also realizes the tathāgatagarbha, understanding that the tathāgatagarbha is the true self, while the manas itself is not real. At this point, the manas finds its master, yet afflictions and habitual tendencies remain, though they become somewhat milder. After the manas realizes that the tathāgatagarbha is the true self and that all phenomena arise from the tathāgatagarbha as its functions and manifestations, it gradually ceases to claim the functions of the tathāgatagarbha as its own. The attachment to self thus gradually diminishes. In the future, not only will the attachment to self be severed, but the attachment to phenomena will also be eliminated. Once both attachments are completely severed, one attains perfect Buddhahood.
