Guess Who He Is

I have an attendant who stays with me day and night; complying with me in every way, serving me with utmost devotion.

If I go east, He does not go west; if I sit or lie down, He does not stand.

If I eat, He does not drink tea; if I look at things, He does not hear sounds.

If I am a human, He is not a ghost; if I ascend to heaven, He does not enter the earth.

If I do good, He helps me accumulate merit; if I do evil, He lends me a hand.

If I cultivate the path, He follows me beyond the world; if I drift with the current, He enters the mundane with me.

If I think and deliberate, He grants me seeds of consciousness; if I rest my mind, He bestows on me vitality and warmth.

If I seek pleasure, He rejoices along; if I seek death, He complies with me as well.

All secrets are fully in His grasp; wholesome karma He proclaims, and unwholesome too He does not conceal.

People say He is foolish, but He is truly selfless; fair and impartial, equal and uniform.

Becoming a Buddha is through Him; transmigrating relies on Him; accomplishing things is He, and becoming a person is also He.

The lands of all Buddhas are accomplished by Him; the hells of Yama are fabricated by Him.

Boundless merit gathers in His single body; whether praised or blamed, He pays no heed.

Self-naturedly pure, He does not condition upon worldly dust; among sages He does not increase, among the ordinary He does not decrease.

Both pure and defiled exist in Him, yet His own substance is unstained; He does not admire the Buddhas, nor abandon ordinary fools.

Through kalpas He has borne no name; His mind-nature is without self; His lifespan is inexhaustible, neither arising nor ceasing.

Complete with the myriad dharmas, yet attaining nothing; a priceless jewel, yet He enjoys not a fraction of it.

Originally noble and wealthy, He humbles Himself to appear poor; entering my body, He wears ragged and defiled garments.

The maṇi jewel's light illuminates the great thousand worlds; if one does not follow Him, one dwells forever in a dark house.

Compared with Him, I am filled with shame and remorse; now I make a vow to learn from Him and follow Him.

Scrubbing away the grime, removing ignorance; revealing His nobility, and showing forth my virtues and abilities.

Complete with the two accomplishments of merit and wisdom, abiding in permanence, bliss, self, and purity; perfecting everything, the sun of wisdom shines radiantly.
