Why can meridian blockages lead to various psychological and emotional abnormalities? Meridian blockages are a physiological phenomenon, while emotional disturbances are psychological states. Physiology and psychology mutually influence each other, with body and mind interdependent.
This "mind" certainly refers primarily to the manas (mental faculty), and secondarily to consciousness. However, when consciousness attempts to control the manas' psychologically abnormal state at this moment, it is often extremely difficult. Thus, situations frequently arise where consciousness does not wish to lose temper, yet the manas nevertheless erupts in anger; whatever actions consciousness does not want to perform, the manas still carries them out, leaving consciousness powerless.
Whenever physical changes occur, psychological reactions follow, indicating that the manas relies on the tathāgatagarbha (Buddha-nature) to constantly perceive the body's condition. Its discernment in this regard is exceptionally acute, and its wisdom power is not weak—it does not necessarily depend on consciousness for perception. Most of the time, consciousness remains unaware of bodily changes; it may gain some understanding through intense contemplation, or perhaps still fail to comprehend. Many people remain oblivious even when severely ill.
The manas is intimately connected to the physical body. Firstly, because the manas clings to the body, regarding it as the self, considering every slight ache or itch of the body as important and worthy of attention, thus producing various reactions. Secondly, because the manas issues commands and transmits information through brain nerve tissues; once meridians become blocked and information cannot be transmitted, the manas manifests various emotional disturbances. If one can cultivate to the stage of being unaffected by the aggregate of form, then no matter what happens to the body, it absolutely will not impact the psychological state of the manas.
