Direct Perception and Non-Valid Cognition of the Mind Consciousness

The direct perception of the mind consciousness: when knowing is correct, that is direct perception; when the dharma understood accords with reality without error, that is direct perception. Conforming to facts is direct perception; reaching the truth is direct perception. Knowing without comparison, with correct knowing, is direct perception; knowing without imagination or fantasy, with correct knowing that conforms to actual circumstances, is direct perception. If the mind consciousness were entirely direct perception, the erroneous cognition of the manas would necessarily be corrected accordingly, and one would know all dharmas as they truly are.

Looking at an apple with the eyes yet believing it to be a pear—this is erroneous cognition, not direct perception. Speaking blindly with open eyes is erroneous cognition. Recalling events from childhood and understanding something clearly is also direct perception. Observing that the physical body of past lives is not me, observing that the physical body of future lives is not me—when the observation is correct, that is direct perception. A deity's superknowledge knowing people and events from countless kalpas ago is direct perception; knowing events of countless kalpas hence is direct perception.
