Because of which deluded thought do sentient beings sink into birth and death? They sink into birth and death because of the deluded thinking of the manas. Who is the accomplice in this sinking into birth and death? The manas's tools for committing the deed are the six consciousnesses, and the six consciousnesses in turn foster the manas's deluded thinking and ignorance; thus there will be no end to birth and death. Someone has to awaken first—who can awaken first? The mind consciousness has no innate attachments, its ignorance is not so deeply rooted, it has strong powers of analysis and deliberation, its thinking is quick and flexible, and it easily accepts new things. Gambling is also a new thing: the mind consciousness accepts it first, and then permeates the manas with it. Once the manas becomes habituated to gambling, it is very hard to quit. All bad things in the world work this way.
