First Change the Habits of the Manas, Then Take the Right Path of Meditative Concentration.

If one cultivates too hastily, and the mind consciousness goes too strongly against the manas, the manas will become very agitated and very uncomfortable, and at times it will lose its temper, feeling very depressed. Then the mind consciousness should slow down its pace and not force the manas too much; instead, choose a dharma that interests the manas and immerse oneself in it, so as to change the manas's habits, and then return to the proper track of cultivating meditative concentration (samādhi).
