This clearly states that when one attains the first fruit, one must necessarily possess preparatory concentration (anāgamya-samādhi); only after attaining the fruit can the karmic seeds of the three evil destinies be eradicated and no longer arise. When the karma leading to the three evil destinies is no longer created, this is called the precepts that the noble ones delight in.
If preparatory concentration (anāgamya-samādhi) is not complete, or if there is no preparatory concentration at all, one cannot actually carry out contemplative practice (vipaśyanā-caryā) on the five aggregates (pañca-skandha), cannot truly reject the five aggregates as self, and the view of the five aggregates as self cannot be eradicated; thus one cannot attain the fruit. The kind of mental consciousness that holds the view that the five aggregates are without self—holding the view is not the same as realization; it belongs to intellectual understanding. Only realization counts as realization; only with unshakable certainty can the bond of views be severed.
Meditative concentration is tightly connected with the manas. With meditative concentration, the manas can remain unobscured by afflictions and deluded thoughts, undisturbed by the continuous discernment of the six consciousnesses, allowing one to diligently apply effort, thereby attaining the fruit and clearly understanding the truth.
