The Mahāyāna Sūtra on the Manifestation of Consciousness (65)

Original text: 由有种故。有色香味。识弃舍身。随其所迁。诸根境界。受及法界。皆悉随之。

Explanation: It is because of the seeds that the six sense objects—the aggregates of form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas—exist. After the ālayavijñāna abandons the present physical body, the seeds of the six sense objects migrate along with the ālayavijñāna onto another physical body. On that other physical body, the eye faculty and its object—material form—appear; the ear faculty and its object—sound—appear; the nose faculty and its object—odor—appear; the tongue faculty and its object—flavor—appear; the body faculty and its object—tangibles—appear; and the manas and its object—the mental sense-object—appear. In this way, the six consciousnesses are born in succession, and the feeling and the realm of dharmas are also born in succession. When the six faculties, six sense objects, and six consciousnesses—the eighteen dharmas—all appear, this constitutes a complete sentient being.
