The Suffering Feeling of Each Consciousness

Question: When an animal's body is still twitching after being dismembered, is the suffering of the manas particularly severe at that moment? Does the dismembered body still experience intense pain?

Answer: The manas does not have feelings of suffering or pleasure arising from tactile objects of the physical body; such physical suffering is perceived by the body consciousness, whereas the suffering of the mind consciousness is mental. When something goes against its mind and does not accord with its wishes, the manas is displeased, and that is suffering. The manas is extremely greedy and full of resentment; because of its clinging, the more it clings, the more it craves and refuses to let go, and the more resentment it harbors. The manas does not want to die, does not want to be killed and eaten, so it has a mind of resentment and feelings of suffering; if it is rescued, it will also feel gratitude. Therefore the manas will repay kindness, hold grudges, and seek revenge. The poison of resentment in the manas's mind is enough to make a person uncomfortable, and its vengeful vows are enough to cause a person to undergo evil retribution and bad karmic results.
