The Painful Feelings of the Various Consciousnesses

Answer: The manas does not have feelings of suffering or pleasure arising from tactile objects of the physical body; such physiological suffering is perceived by the body consciousness, while the suffering of the mind consciousness is mental. When something goes against its mind and does not accord with its wishes, the manas's displeasure is suffering. The manas is extremely greedy and hateful; because of its attachments, the more it clings, the more it craves and refuses to let go, and the more hateful it becomes. The manas does not wish to die, does not wish to be killed and eaten, so it has a hateful mind and feelings of suffering; if it is rescued, it will also have a heart of gratitude. Therefore the manas will repay kindness, hold grudges, and take revenge. The poison of hatred in the manas's mind is enough to make a person uncomfortable, and its vow of hatred is enough to make a person undergo evil retribution and evil consequences.
