Saṃyukta Āgama (352), Part One

(1) Original text: 如是我闻。一时。佛住舍卫国祇树给孤独园。尔时。世尊告诸比丘。若诸沙门婆罗门。于法不如实知。法集法灭。法灭道迹不如实知。彼非沙门沙门数。非婆罗门婆罗门数。彼亦非沙门义。婆罗门义。见法自知作证。我生已尽。梵行已立。所作已作。自知不受后有。

Explanation: The World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: If śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas do not truly understand the dharma, do not truly understand the arising and ceasing of the dharma, and do not truly understand the path leading to the cessation of the dharma, they are not śramaṇas and are not counted among śramaṇas; they are not brāhmaṇas and are not counted among brāhmaṇas. Nor are they true śramaṇas or genuine brāhmaṇas; they have not seen the dharma and known for themselves, realizing it through direct personal verification: birth for me has been exhausted, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, and I know for myself that there will be no further becoming.

Original text: 云何法不如实知。云何法集不如实知。云何法灭不如实知。云何法灭道迹不如实知。谓于老死法不如实知。老死集老死灭。老死灭道迹不如实知。如是生有。取爱受触。六入处不如实知。六入处集。六入处灭。六入处灭道迹不如实知。如是诸法不如实知。法集法灭。法灭道迹不如实知。

Explanation: What dharma is not truly understood? What dharma's arising is not truly understood? What dharma's cessation is not truly understood? What is meant by not truly understanding the path of practice leading to the cessation of the dharma? It means not truly understanding the dharma of aging-and-death, not truly understanding the arising and ceasing of aging-and-death, and not truly understanding the path of practice leading to the cessation of aging-and-death. Likewise, they do not truly understand the dharmas of birth, becoming, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, and the six sense bases; they do not truly understand the arising of the dharmas of birth, becoming, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, and the six sense bases; they do not truly understand the cessation of the dharmas of birth, becoming, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, and the six sense bases; and they do not truly understand the path leading to the cessation of the dharmas of birth, becoming, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, and the six sense bases. In the same way, they do not truly understand all dharmas, do not truly understand the arising of all dharmas, do not truly understand the cessation of all dharmas, and do not truly understand the path leading to the cessation of all dharmas.
