The awareness after a thought arises is, first of all, the awareness of the mind consciousness, and it is mainly the awareness of the mind consciousness. The arising of a thought is initiated by the manas, without language or words; afterwards, when the mind consciousness gives rise to a thought, there may then be language and words. The manas likes to grasp at conditions, and thus gives rise to thoughts at all times and in all places, arising thoughts upon encountering conditions—this is determined by its imputed nature (parikalpita-svabhāva). However, this imputed nature (parikalpita-svabhāva) can be changed through the mind consciousness's continuous supervision and regulation; only in this way does cultivation have hope.
