The aggregate of consciousness primarily refers to the aggregating function of the six consciousnesses within the five aggregates and the aggregating function of the seventh consciousness, both of which are characterized by arising and ceasing. Since "aggregate" denotes conditioned formations subject to arising and ceasing, the aggregate of consciousness is impermanent, devoid of self, and empty—arising and ceasing without inherent essence.
The eighth consciousness can aggregate karmic seeds, yet this aggregating function is mechanical in nature—devoid of volition, occurring as it naturally is. It is an automatic function of the Dharma realm, without any artificial creation, arrangement, or mental activity. Therefore, the aggregating function of the eighth consciousness is not subject to arising and ceasing and cannot be categorized within the arising-and-ceasing aggregating functions of the five aggregates.
